Tom Brady poured his heart and soul into the game of football. With a collection of Super Bowl trophies and remarkable comeback stories to his name, he has inspired countless players and fans alike throughout his long career. Thus, when the NFL officially welcomed him as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, the excitement in the air at the team facility was palpable. Staff members and players assembled nervously but eagerly, all curious to see how Brady’s legendary experience and unparalleled drive would influence their path forward.

Yet, even someone like Tom Brady—widely regarded as perhaps the greatest quarterback of all time—needs a source of inspiration from time to time. In his case, it was a simple but profound gesture from his older sister, Maureen. She gifted him a coin, one that he has carried for 25 years, and this small token reignited his competitive spirit with memories and symbols of dedication and excellence.

In the inaugural episode of *Behind the Shield*, a documentary series that sheds light on Brady’s arrival in Las Vegas, he shared a touching account of his sister. Maureen wasn’t just his sibling; she stood out as an exceptional college softball pitcher, earning accolades as an All-American. Brady holds her in such high esteem that he considers her to be the best athlete in their family. During her own journey, Maureen carried the same coin in her sock for every game she played—a constant companion that represented her commitment to winning and excellence.

When the New England Patriots selected Brady in the NFL draft, Maureen passed that coin on to him, signifying their bond and the values they shared. For Tom, this coin became more than a keepsake; it was a steadfast reminder of his unyielding commitment to greatness and a motivator throughout the ups and downs of his career. “My older sister was probably the best athlete in the family. Her last year of playing college softball was my first year going to the Patriots,” he reflected. “She gave me a coin that she wore in her sock for every game. I took that coin and put it in my bag. That was 25 years ago. It’s been in my bag every day for 25 years. It said ‘commitment to excellence.’ That’s what this organization is all about.”

Upon joining the Raiders, Brady naturally brought the coin with him—not just as a cherished memory, but as a beacon of what he represents and what the Raiders strive for. With the team facing struggles in recent seasons, his intention is clear: to help lead the franchise back to its former glory, a time defined by a strong commitment to excellence.

Reflecting on the spirit of family that surrounds Brady, we can’t overlook Maureen’s impressive accomplishments outside of helping her brother. An accomplished pitcher at Fresno State University, her athletic pursuits eventually led her into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame. Now a dedicated nurse and a softball coach in Bakersfield, Maureen is busy raising her two daughters, Maya and Hannah, as a single mother. Both girls have taken after their mother, showcasing impressive athletic talents; Maya plays softball at UCLA, while Hannah shines on the volleyball court at the University of Michigan.

However, Brady is acutely aware that reviving the Raiders’ fortunes cannot rest solely on his shoulders. The expectations surrounding TB12 are sky-high, evident in the determined faces of every staff member as they welcomed him into the fold. Brady knows that molding a successful franchise requires more than just raw talent; it demands time, perseverance, and above all, teamwork.

“The ultimate team sport” is how Brady describes football, echoing the sentiment that true success hinges on the contributions of every member of the organization. “I’m not here to solve every problem. I can’t do it anyway,” he emphasized. “If there’s one thing I know about football, it’s that it takes every single person to be successful. It’s tough. Every day is tough as an NFL player and as a part of an NFL organization. The challenge is what makes it valuable. If it was easy, nobody would respect it.”

Getting this new chapter off on the right foot, Brady is surrounded by a cadre of coaches who are committed to building a winning culture, including notable names like Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly. With new general manager John Spytek—who has been an influential presence in Brady’s past, both as a teammate and colleague—along with retaining franchise cornerstone Maxx Crosby, there is a budding sense of hope. Adding quarterback Geno Smith into the mix presents a fresh opportunity to elevate the franchise’s gameplay.

As Tom Brady steps into this new role, the journey ahead is more than just football; it’s about cultivating relationships and nurturing a culture of excellence that inspires each player to not only meet but exceed expectations together.
