The Pittsburgh Steelers are heading into Week One with a new signal caller. However, it remains uncertain who that quarterback will be, it appears.
The alternatives are designated starter Russell Wilson or second-stringer Justin Fields. Both are new additions to the squad this season. The Steelers are set to face the Atlanta Falcons to commence their NFL season on Sunday.
Once again, Wilson was identified as the starter — but he is coping with a calf ailment. Thus, everything remains uncertain at this time. Wilson, for his part, informed reporters that he is eager to participate.
“I’m attempting to prepare my body and get ready to go. Just doing everything we can,” Wilson stated, through Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Wilson managed to participate in some practice on Friday, but reports indicate it was not a complete session.
“Wilson felt tightness in his calf during Thursday’s practice and was categorized as limited as a result. Reporters at the open segment of practice on Friday noted that Wilson was working off to the side and he mentioned not doing much during the team phase of the last practice before Sunday’s match against the Falcons,” penned Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “Wilson remarked that he’s attempting to be prudent about not overexerting himself, but remains optimistic that he’ll be fit enough to make his debut for the Steelers.”
The Steelers have never concluded a season with a losing record under coach Mike Tomlin. Analysts forecast that might change this year. However, much hinges on the steadiness of the offense. Defensively, there is no doubt that Pittsburgh ranks among the best in the league. Therefore, it will ultimately depend on Wilson’s performance, and if not Wilson, then certainly Fields.
