The Week 7 college football schedule featured one of its most eagerly awaited matchups: the Texas Longhorns against the Oklahoma Sooners. The Red River rivalry has delivered numerous unforgettable moments throughout its history.
Longhorns Plant Their Flag Through Baker Mayfield’s Jersey
Texas dominated the Sooners in a decisive 34-3 victory. Following the game, the Longhorns reinforced the deep-seated animosity between the two teams. After the final whistle, Texas players took the Oklahoma jersey of former star Baker Mayfield and planted their flag through it at midfield.

As expected, this viral moment sparked a flurry of reactions from fans on social media.
One fan commented on X, formerly known as Twitter, “Still salty Baker cooked them 6 years ago,” punctuating the statement with a series of clown emojis.
Another user expressed, “Mayfield hasn’t played CFB since 2017, this is lame asf.”
The Longhorns’ actions appeared to be a direct reply to Mayfield’s infamous flag planting on the Texas mid-field logo after the Sooners triumphed in the 2017 Red River game.
James Franklin Blocks Penn State’s Flag Planting Efforts
Flag planting became a recurring theme in Week 7, as the Penn State Nittany Lions attempted a similar gesture after defeating USC. The fourth-ranked Nittany Lions held off the unranked Trojans for a 33-30 overtime win on Saturday. However, when they attempted to plant their flag on the Trojans’ mid-field logo, head coach James Franklin intervened. His displeasure was evident as he rushed to the field to retrieve the flag from his players before heading to the locker room.

Franklin’s dissatisfaction likely stemmed from the team’s lackluster performance. Despite being favorites, the Nittany Lions found themselves trailing by double digits at halftime. Even after rallying in the second half to maintain their undefeated record, Franklin did not feel there was anything to celebrate.
