The Las Vegas Raiders have reached a decision regarding their quarterback situation ahead of the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins, opting to retain Gardner Minshew as the starter.
During a press conference on Wednesday, head coach Antonio Pierce explained the choice, stating, “What do you got to lose,” given the team’s current record of 2-7.
“When we brought in Gardner, we anticipated the kind of performance we’ve seen before. At some point, you have to instill confidence in a player,” Pierce remarked.
“There have been instances, certainly, involving turnovers and other issues that led us to either bench him or consider different quarterbacks.”
“However, this week, it seems that Gardner presents us with the best chance to advance. He has every opportunity to head out there and secure a victory.”
Minshew began the season as the starting quarterback, having taken the field in eight games — with seven starts — amassing 1,501 yards, six touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also fumbled the ball four times.
Among the highlights, Minshew led the Raiders to victories against both the Ravens and the Browns, although he faced challenges against teams like the Broncos and Rams.
Recently, the Raiders had benched Minshew in favor of Aidan O’Connell, but the second-year quarterback suffered a fractured thumb and was placed on Injured Reserve.
To provide additional depth at quarterback, the Raiders acquired Desmond Ridder, although Ridder will serve as the backup as the offensive unit strives to find its rhythm.
A key aspect of this transition will involve Minshew collaborating with a new play-caller. Veteran NFL coach Norv Turner is set to take charge of the offense, returning to the Raiders for the first time since his tenure from 2004 to 2005.
Turner, known for leading the Chargers to multiple playoff appearances as head coach, last held the role of offensive coordinator in 2019, overseeing the Panthers’ offense during 2018-19. He also enjoyed a three-year stint as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator, which culminated in a division title in 2015.
