Michael Vick is officially embarking on his coaching journey. The former NFL standout quarterback has come to an agreement to take the helm as the head football coach at Norfolk State, as initially reported by David Teel of The Virginian-Pilot.
The 44-year-old Vick is anticipated to be unveiled at a press conference in the coming week. According to Teel, he has already begun putting together a coaching staff, reaching out to familiar faces to join him as assistant coaches and support staff.
A former No. 1 overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, Vick had an impressive 13-year career that included four Pro Bowl selections.
Although Vick has yet to serve in a head coaching capacity, he brings relevant experience. In 2017, he worked as a coaching intern with the Kansas City Chiefs under the guidance of Andy Reid, and in 2018, he took on the role of offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Legends in the Alliance of American Football (AAF).
Norfolk State, a Division I institution in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), recently parted ways with head coach Dawson Odums after a tough 4-8 season in 2024.
This week, Vick confirmed that discussions with Norfolk State were underway, but it was later disclosed that another institution was also pursuing him for a head coaching role. Ultimately, Vick opted to return to his Virginia roots, where he was raised in Newport News, to embrace the challenge of guiding the Spartans.
As Vick’s coaching career gets underway, his vast football knowledge and leadership experience may present an appealing opportunity for a program aiming to gain traction. He is now set to establish a new legacy as a head coach, stepping away from his electrifying playing days.
